Moving Mountains (1850-2012) is a limited-edition book that was created for the exhibition Aperture Remix and published by Conveyor. For the 7 that were not available, we made dark reproductions as placeholders to emphasis the singularity of these prints in contrast to the multiplicity of my iPhone pictures of them. After I dowloaded on my iPhone as many camera app as I could find, I then re-photographed the mountains I found in the Masters of Photography Series using their various filters. I chose the Aperture’s Masters of Photography Series. Mountains, Moving (1850-2012): of Aperture Masters of Photography, for Aperture Remix, 2012Īperture Remix invited ten contemporary photographers – Rinko Kawauchi, Vik Muniz, Taiyo Onorato and Nico Krebs, Martin Parr, Doug Rickard, Viviane Sassen, Alec Soth, Penelope Umbrico, James Welling –to select an Aperture publication that was influential in forming their work, and to pay it artistic homage. These “leaks” are the result of an algorithm loaded into the vacuum of a chip, capable of producing nearly endless variations within the space of a few seconds. If light is the first and foremost element of all photography, the role of light in this context is inverted. ![]() Light leaks and chemical burn filters are especially absurd in the context of both analog photography and smart-phone camera technology: ‘master’ photographers would never accept such mistakes in their work, and the impossibility of holes, gaps, spatial volume, or liquid chemical necessary to produce these effects, stands in complete opposition to the very apparatus simulating them. In this work the mountain, the oldest landmark, site of orientation, and spiritual contemplation, becomes unstable, mobile, has no gravity, and changes with each iteration.Ĭentral to this work is the overwhelming number of camera app filters that simulate the mistakes of analogue film photography. The hallucinogenic colors of the camera app filters blend with the disorienting effects of the iPhone’s gravity sensor to dislodge any perception of stability in the mountain, the master (most often gendered as male), or the photographic medium. Photo grain, dot-screen, pixel, and screen resolution collide performing undulating moirés. I downloaded hundreds camera apps for my iPhone to re-photograph the masters’ mountains and process them through the multiple filters of the camera apps. For this project I focus on iconic images of mountains in various online and print media such as Aperture’s Masters of Photography book series. For movies and TV shows, there are streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney +, etc. For videos, the biggest competitor is YouTube, where a massive repository of videos lies. For music, online streaming apps like Spotify, Amazon Music, or any localized music apps. ITunes has a number of alternatives for different features. Unless one has a large library of downloaded music, millennial listeners just need to go on any streaming app and get access to unlimited songs and music videos. Music lovers do not now need to download songs, that they can stream any time. ![]() Other music apps or even YouTube, which offer so much readily available free content for streaming are fast becoming the user preference. Radio or streaming of videos also requires a paid subscription or is pay-to-download. While the program itself is free, most new features require a paid subscription. The biggest drawback of iTunes is the restrictive nature of acquiring music or accessing new music. So no matter which Apple device you’re using, the music library can be available. Another big advantage of iTunes is that one can sync it across devices. iTunes is also now available on Windows, so the benefits are not restricted to Apple devices only, but one can also access iTunes through the Microsoft Store. The features like shuffle are delightful in introducing forgotten songs and bring up some surprises that make the music experience unique and wonderful. Whether users access it from the Mac or from an iPhone or any Windows system, the quality of the program and the seamless experience remains the same. Now, apps and music are so readily available, iTunes is still the place to store an entire library of downloaded mp3, which is not streaming online, but owned by the user. For those users who remember having to sieve through messy folders for music, iTunes came as an absolute boon. While predominantly perceived as a music organizer, iTunes also has a vast library of e-books, podcasts, audiobooks, videos, and more.iTunes is, in fact, ideal to store audiobooks and organize them properly.Īn excellent user-friendly interface, with simple navigation and features, makes iTunes a great platform to store and experience music. iTunes also now has a Radio feature, which connects you to radio streaming channels from across the world, covering a number of genres, topics, and music preferences. One can easily purchase music through the iTunes store, and have access to millions of songs and albums from across the world. The music can be played across devices, which are not restricted to Apple devices anymore. iTunes is also a great platform for movies and TV shows, One can edit, rename, or move files, and even change the file format. The visualizer feature adds graphical effects to the song being played, adding a new layer to the music experience. For Apple users, iTunes can sync on multiple devices, so you can maintain the iTunes library across devices. Essentially an mp3 player, iTunes allows users to shuffle through their song collection, to experience randomized song playlists, enhancing the listening experience. Thousands of downloaded songs and albums are easy to categorize, sort, and create custom playlists. ITunes is an excellent program to organize and a personal music repository. Playing music sorted by artist, song, or album is so easy, that it’s a delight to organize music according to our preferences. Today, even though multiple other multimedia players, music apps, and stores are available, Apple users still rely on their iTunes for their music repository. Music lovers from the early 2000s can recall how novel the experience of organizing and playing music was to that generation, with the new iTunes. Most users primarily use iTunes for music. We associate sensory cues with certain ideas, concepts, or events. More on that further down.įurthermore, it’s important to keep in mind that people have something of a collective memory. Whatever font you end up choosing, however, you’re going to want to use a serif font for your body text, as they tend to offer a more pleasant reading experience on paper. Having more than two fonts is not recommended, as it can easily get distracting, confusing, and detract from the overall legibility of your book. The purpose of the former is to be as legible as possible, the purpose of the latter is to evoke the mood or spirit of your book. Generally, you’re going to want to select two fonts when creating your book: one for your body text, and one for your titles – both on the front cover and your chapter titles (if you choose to have any). To start off, however, just know that serif fonts have little ‘edges’ at the ends of the letters (they look like tiny feet), and sans serif fonts do not. If not, then you are now! We’ll discuss exactly what sets them apart from each other later on in this article. You’re probably aware that there are two main font types: serif and sans serif. By the time you’re done reading, you ought to have a general idea of what you should avoid doing at all costs, and where you’re free to indulge your creative sensibilities. The goal is to make your self-published book look like a professionally published one, and there are certain tricks you can use to achieve that result. ![]() These are what we’re going to be discussing in this article. There are certain rules of thumb that you ought to keep in mind. Most people can’t even tell the difference between Times New Roman and Baskerville on printed paper. What font should I use? Should specific genres be written using specific fonts? Can you influence the subconscious of your readers with specific fonts and thereby increase the likelihood of them liking your book? All these questions usually result in some quick Google searches, which then deliver a number of alarmist articles desperately imploring you never to use Times New Roman for anything ever, along with a million other font faux pas.Īs compelling as these articles are, the reality is rarely so dramatic.
